Associate Director and Professor
Center for Global Infectious Disease Research, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
Affiliate Professor, University of Washington
Biography:
Prof. David Sherman earned his PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University, and preformed post-graduate work at the Rockefeller University and at Washington University in St. Louis. He began work on M. tuberculosis while at PathoGenesis Corp., where he played a lead role in the discovery and early development of the anti-TB agent PA-824 that is now in clinical trials. The work in the Sherman laboratory is focused on developing novel drugs and diagnostics to combat tuberculosis.
Abstract:Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is the world’s #1 infectious killer. As with other organisms, MTB stress response is controlled at the systems-level through adaptive gene response networks. To understand TB pathogenesis and improve therapeutic options, we are probing MTB regulatory networks in a variety of ways. With a combination of new genetic approaches and new in silico tools, we are identifying new drug targets, prioritizing new drug combinations and gaining new insights into the development of TB drug resistance.
